Two 'peas in a pod'

One of the reasons that I love getting together with my friend Mary is that we have a couple of girls who love to play together. Hannah and Emma are only 3 months apart in age, and it is so much fun to see what they come up with. Sometimes they play with Abby as well, sometimes (but not too often) with Emma's brother Matthew, but not usually with Becca, since Emma has a complete aversion to anything remotely resembling baby drool.

This is something she's going to need to get over since she'll be sharing her room with a new baby brother, oh pretty much any day now.

But, Hannah and Emma have been friends and had fun playing together since back in these days:

And our trip this past weekend was no exception:

They played with each other:

They ate with each other:

They rested with each other.

And with some company as well...

Abby got into the fun sometimes:

You'll notice Becca in the background of these...But don't worry - she was perfectly happy to play with lots of new toys all by herself.

Like her sippy cup and Emma's grabber toy thingy:

And chairs...

And Mary was happy to oblige her in a few games of 'Ring Around a Rosy' when the 'big' girls wouldn't.

Heads or Tails #13 - Road

The topic this week is Road - something which I find timely since we just completed a road trip yesterday, driving to and from the Detroit area in a total of about 12 hours (including the time we spent there).

With 3 kids.

And a few words that come to mind when thinking about making a trip like this with my children are exhausting, stressful, and hopeful. Exhausting for us and them - it's amazing how much a few hours of riding in the car can take out of you. Stressful because we have to try to figure out enough ways to keep them occupied in the car or we'll end up hearing, "how many more minutes until we get there?" several dozen times. And hopeful that our drive will be safe and that everyone will arrive at our destination intact, if hungry, bored and with a whole lot of energy to expend.

Actually, things did go pretty well yesterday, notwithstanding the half hour we spent at a gas station when our van battery died before we left). The older girls amused themselves with their VideoNow Jr. players (and the 3 PVD disks that we have left, after losing a couple of them) for quite a while.

VisitToDetroit-Nov07_001

Becca (unfortunately) did not sleep - she is starting to get to the stage where falling asleep in the car (in the daylight anyway) just doesn't happen. But she did stay in a fairly good mood all day even without having had a nap.

We picked the girls up at my mom's (she was babysitting while we went to my dad's banquet) around 9:00 pm and headed straight on the road for home from there. Abby and Becca fell asleep not long after we got on the road, but it took Hannah a while longer.

Eventually she did succumb and all 3 girls snoozed most of the way home.

Meritorious Conduct

I wrote last week about my dad's love with the sport of bowling (yes, it is a sport!). Last night this love affair reached its pinnacle as he was inducted into the Detroit Bowling Hall of Fame, in the city which has been called the "Bowling Capital of the World".

We made the 2+ hour trek to Detroit, after a few hiccups, and were able to spend some time visiting my dad at his new apartment and also visiting his girlfriend, Phyllis.

Yes, I had nothing better to do while we were stuck at the gas station than to bug my girls by taking pictures... :)

We dropped the girls off at my mom's house, ordered them a pizza for dinner, and headed to the banquet. Other than my dad and Phyllis, we knew nobody. And they were seated up at the head table, so we were seated with 6 strangers. One of whom is a good friend of my dad's and the one to actually induct him last night. He didn't remember me - he did remember my brother. Everyone remembers my brother - he's the bowling prodigy. I managed a couple of 200 games during my (limited) career as a youth bowler. Donnie started bowling left-handed during practice games because he was bored and wanted a challenge. Yes, he is that good. He could've turned pro if he'd wanted to. But bowling has always been our dad's passion, not ours.

Four hours of dinner, presentations, speeches and schmoozing. And lots of sports talk as the guys at our table kept sneaking peeks at the NFL scores on their cell phones throughout the whole thing. The food was very, very good although our tablemates were not impressed by the cash bar, especially after the $40 ticket price for the banquet.

VisitToDetroit-Nov07_024
(My dad and Phyllis at their table at dinner)

My dad's was the 5th induction and one of two non-bowlers inducted this year. Well, my dad is a bowler, but his scores aren't what he is known for. Twenty years of 'meritorious service' to the bowling sport and profession as a member of the media, a board member on several organizations, an organizer of tournaments and charity events - his love for the sport. These are what got him inducted. During his friend's speech as he introduced my dad, a mention was made that, "he's written about probably everyone in this room" and that made me realize just how well-known my dad is in the bowling scene. As he accepted his plaque and made his speech (his first public speaking event in his 78 years - he'd practiced his speech on my brother over the phone several times and on us earlier at his apartment and was understandably nervous about it), I realized that in his moment of accomplishment and success...

I am proud of him. That is something I haven't really been able to say about my father in a very long time, if ever. But he took something that he loved and he worked hard to make a career and a life out of it and he has achieved a level of success that I didn't think possible 20 years ago.

(My dad and his plaque - I cut his friend out of this one, only because I didn't ask permission to post his picture)

He is happy. And I am happy for him.

Congratulations, Dad.

The trip that almost wasn't

Phew! All I can say is that we made it - finally. We were originally supposed to drive to Detroit (well the Detroit area, that is) yesterday and spend the weekend. Instead, we decided to wait and drive in this morning and make a day trip out of it. I wasn't feeling well yesterday at all and we are far shorter on finances than we thought (due to Ron's having taken several days off a few weeks ago when the girls were all sick), so we had no money for a hotel room either.

I'll write a post later on about what we did end up doing yesterday...

The agenda today originally included stops in Ann Arbor to visit my brother and see his new place there, then heading to Southfield to see my dad in his new aparment, then heading to my mom's to drop the girls off there, and then going to the banquet for my dad.

Yes, I said 'originally'... Things didn't get off to the best start.

First of all, we were running late. I'd wanted to take off by 9:30 am but it was an hour after that when we actually made it out the door. Our first stop was to fill up the gas tank. Which was no big deal except for the horrendous amount of money that it costs nowadays, but that's nothing new. What was new is what happened when Ron tried to start the van back up.

Click. Click. Click. Uh-oh

Yep, our battery was suddenly dead. So we sat at the gas station, 3 little girls strapped in their seats. Ron went in search of someone who could possibly give us a jump. He found a very nice lady who agreed to help. But when Ron hooked up the jumper cables and tried to get things going, two things happened. Or at least one thing didn't happen - the van didn't start. What did happen is that the connection in our van started smoking and when Ron pulled the cable off, it had burned clear through so the clip thingy (that's the real, technical name for it, right? LOL) actually came right off.

Apparently my wonderful hubby had hooked the cables up wrong on our end. Oops.

The second try was much more successful - a different set of cables did their thing and we had a running van again. Thank goodness! It was too late to still make it to my brother's in time though - he had a 1:00 pm appointment, so we just drove straight to my dad's. And here we are - Ron is playing blocks on the floor with Becca and watching football, Abby and Hannah are coloring and playing with a music keyboard of my dad's, and I'm trying to figure out this iMac to be able to write this.

Hopefully there will be no more 'excitement' for the rest of this trip, other than what's already planned.

I can hope, right? :)

Trip to Mary's Part 2 - Saturday, Soccer and Shopping!

Gotta love the alliteration, right? :)

Saturday started out earlier than we'd hoped, considering how late some of the kids had gone to bed, but we ended up not having to rush around to make it to Emma's soccer game by 10:30 - yes, although my kids' soccer season is done, theirs actually won't end until this coming Saturday, so you're about to be subjected to yet more soccer photos, LOL. I promise to keep them to a minimum though. :) But Emma (who had a cold to begin with) spent most of Friday night coughing and coughing, so Mary decided that soccer playing wasn't a good idea for her.

Then we were wondering if Emma had somehow come down with the same illness/non-illness that my kids had last week? Who knows...

So we had a much more relaxed morning than we'd planned, but it was nice to just let the kids play and take our time in getting ready to go. Matthew's soccer game wasn't until noon. We packed up the kids, chairs and blanket, snacks and drinks and caravaned over to their soccer complex.

As a little aside here - they have so much nicer of a soccer setup than we do! Ours takes place at multiple schools and there are no food or restroom facilities at any of them. They have a whole soccer complex so everyone plays there and there's a "snack shack" and restroom facility right there, as well as porta-potties set up in various locations around the complex too.

I was also impressed that Matthew's game included an actual referee and line judges. I'm not sure if that was just because he's in a higher age group (U-12), so we'll have to see how ours compares as the girls get older. It was strange to see other differences between how girls and boys play and how much more adept the older kids are.

It was on the cool side - and very, very windy. The kind of wind that knocks your chair over the moment you stand up. We spread out a blanket for the kids to play on and I'd brought one of our soccer balls for them to kick around too. And, considering that it was noon, they snacked. And snacked, and snacked some more - at least in the case of Becca. I don't think she was without a snack in her hand the whole game.

(Don't ask me why they're standing on one foot - I have no idea... LOL)

(Matthew's the one running in the center of the picture. I got an awesome shot of him kicking the ball, but I moved the camera as I took it and it didn't turn out...)

(Two little girls playing in a really big goal!)

After the game (Matthew's team won, 3-2) we headed back and fed everyone lunch. I didn't even bother to try putting Becca down for a nap considering the noise level in the house and I was hoping she'd sleep on the way to the outlet mall. No such luck there.

Mary and I finally got out of the house and drove down to the outlets. Her husband Dave had offered to watch all of the big kids, so we just had Becca with us. A tired, grumpy Becca who'd eaten lots of snacks but very little else all day.

Our first stop at the outlet mall was OshKosh B'Gosh. We usually skip this store because even their sales prices are on the high side. But they had sidewalk sales going so we thought we'd give it a try. And we did find some good deals - I got a couple of pairs of pants for Abby at $7.99 each and some hair accessories. Oh yes and matching pairs of 'footless tights' for all 3 girls. I'd also picked out coordinating skorts and shirts for them, thinking of photo opportunities, but when I saw the total price, I put everything back but the tights. I knew I could probably find the other parts to the outfits cheaper at Children's Place.

And oh. my. goodness.

I've had good luck with the Children's Place Outlet store before. I am used to seeing great sales there. But this was beyond anything I'd see before.

Racks and racks of brand new, Children's Place clothes for girls. For $2.99. That's cheaper than I can get a lot of used clothing!

I went into snatch and grab mode thanking myself for having brought the stroller this time to heap things on. As my piles grew, my toddler also grew - more and more upset. Having kept herself occupied at Osh Kosh B'gosh by pulling clothing and sunglasses off of racks and leaving behind a trail that made me cringe and run around after her frantically picking things up and playing tug-of-war with a stubborn 21-month-old, I'd had the brilliant idea of strapping her into the stroller this time. And she was not happy about it.

Not happy at all. And she let me know. Loudly. very loudly.

So I finally gave in amidst all of the pitying glances from other shoppers and hauled her out of the stroller. At which point the stroller immediately fell over backwards, sending all of my piles crashing to the floor.

Ok. Deep breath. Put still screaming child down and pick up clothes. Pile them in the stroller seat as well as on the back so as to not overbalance the stroller again. Hmm, now where to put the hysterical toddler who does not want to be held, or to be put down... This is exactly the reason why I've been wanting to get a sling so I can carry her on my hip. Am now kicking myself for not having gone ahead and bought one before this trip.

Enter Mary, my life saving friend. Who has a stubborn (ok, extremely stubborn) child herself and can sympathize. She paid for her purchases and then took a still grumpy Becca outside so I could finish shopping and sorting in peace.

And oh the shopping and sorting. You would not believe the amount of clothes I left that store with. Not counting the things I bought for my daycare provider (which she reimbursed me for), I filled four large shopping bags. With jeans, capri pants, shorts for next summer, shirts for this year and next year, dresses and skirts. Halloween t-shirts (long sleeved) for Abby and Hannah. Two belts for Abby. Cute tights for Becca. My girls are finally set for this year for clothes.

Oh yes, and the best part? Well I'd brought a Children's Place coupon with me on this trip, but (kicking self again) had left it at Mary's. As I stood by the checkout sorting through my piles, I lamented that fact and on a whim, asked the cashier if they had any extra coupons. She didn't, but only moments later handed me one that the woman she'd just been ringing up had left behind. And since you can bump up the 15% off to 25% off just by applying for a charge card (whether it's approved or denied doesn't matter - and I knew it would be denied), I ended up getting every single piece of clothing for a whopping total of $2.24.

Yes, that's two dollars and twenty-four cents. Apiece.

Folks, I spent a grand total of $100 and came out with four bulging shopping bags filled with clothing. I love the Children's Place Outlet!!!

Mary wanted to hit the fabric store in town, so we figured it might be a good idea to do it now and try to get "Grumpy Toddler" (formerly known as Becca) some sleep in the van. I dropped Mary off and told her I'd be back in 15-20 minutes. And I drove.

And drove, and drove some more. After 20 minutes I drove back to the fabric store and started doing laps around the strip mall's parking lot.

And Becca stayed awake. The entire time. Almost 40 minutes while Mary was in the store, and the 5 minutes it took us to drive back to the outlet mall.

By now it was past dinner time so I knew Becca must be hungry. We stopped at a little restaurant where we'd eaten before (right next to the Carter's outlet) and ate. Well, Mary and I ate. Becca played with her food but refused to eat any of it.

After dinner, Mary headed over to the Hanes outlet store and I took Becca into Carter's. We've had good luck with this store in the past, but lately they haven't had much. They don't carry irregulars anymore and I'd gotten spoiled by paying $5 for pajamas so I can't bring myself to pay $10 or $15 there now. Especially since I can buy them at home on sale for that price. I did find a couple of pairs of pajama pants for Abby and a pair of pajamas for Hannah - and I did spring for a $10 pair of fleece jammies for Becca since I wanted to get her ready for bed before we left and had forgotten to bring any with me. She needed them anyway. :) Becca loved playing at the Lego table at Carter's. And she loved sitting on it...

Our last stop was the KB Toy Liquidator store. Again, if you hit it at the right time, with the right sales, you can really make out. This trip wasn't so good - even though they had several brands of toys on a 'buy one get one 50% off' deal, they were expensive to begin with and I know I can probably find better prices at home when it gets closer to Christmas. Becca discovered the Backyardigans section and plopped her little self down. She's pretty partial to Pablo and has appropriated Hannah's plush one for herself already. She thought the singing Pablo at the store was very cool.

I didn't buy much there either - just umbrellas for Abby (princesses) and Hannah (Tinkerbell) since they've been needing them anyway for the bus stop. And four 'Sky Dancer' dolls that you can make really fly - they looked cool and at $2.33 each, I figured we can stock up for birthday parties that the girls are sure to get invited to this year.

And go figure - Hannah even brought home a birthday party invitation this week, but it's a party for a boy. Guess he probably wouldn't appreciate a Sky Dancer doll...

All in all, it was a very successful - and fun - shopping trip, other than dealing with Grumpy Girl. Who fell asleep almost immediately after we left the last store, by the way. And stayed asleep even when I transferred her to the pack-n-play. However, she did wake up a couple of hours later and was up for almost 2 hours (11:30 pm until 1:30 am) so that did kind of backfire. Oh well...

Trip to Mary's - Friday

Day 1 of our trip last weekend was hectic - to say the least. Since I wasn't sure until the last minute that we actually were going to go, I hadn't packed anything. And I had a lengthy project I was working on at work as well so even though I had the afternoon off, it sure didn't feel like it stress-wise. I ran a couple of errands on the way home and then frantically began packing. Ron was home with Becca and the two of them were conked out on our bed when I got home - I just closed the door so I wouldn't disturb them while I raced around to get things ready. Thankfully I've done these trips enough times that I can usually pack without having to think about it much. This trip was especially hard to prepare for though since the weather has been so iffy that I basically had to pack clothes for every eventuality.

I finally got everything loaded and headed out to pick Hannah and Becca up at daycare. Becca was feeling much better, thankfully. We drove to school and picked up Abby and then hit the road.

The drive down - wasn't as peaceful as I'd hoped. The girls were excited and I realized that having recently switched Abby's and Hannah's seats in the van probably wasn't a good idea since the new seating arrangement put Abby next to Becca. So much for Becca getting more of a nap on the way down - Abby kept her pretty wound up the whole time.

The girls were thrilled when we arrived and promptly disappeared with Mary's kids to play. Emma is only 3 months younger than Hannah and those two are 'double trouble' as Mary calls them. Abby was thrilled to be able to play video games with Matthew (he's 10) since we don't have any at home.

Hannah and Emma - two peas in a pod...

Being goofy...

Even with having gotten there with plenty of time for the kids to play before bedtime, it was difficult getting everyone to sleep that night. Hannah slept in Emma's bed and Becca slept in the same room, in our pack-n-play. Abby slept on a cot in Matthew's room and I slept on an air mattress in Emma's room with Hannah and Becca.

The biggest problem was between Matthew (who has ADHD) and Abby (who we suspect may have something similar). Although they generally play together well, there are times when they clash - like Friday night. Matthew insisted on sleeping with the bedroom door open and Abby wanted it closed. As his room is directly adjacent to the living room (it's the doorway with the safety gate in the photo above), sound tends to carry, so I knew the door really should be shut. We went back and forth with me shutting the door most of the way and Matthew jumping out of bed to open it. By the time they were finally asleep, Matthew had lost his video game and computer privileges for the next day.

But finally, all of the kids were asleep. Which meant... brownies! Chocolate delight - yum....

Mary and I have a track record of staying up way too late and talking when we visit each other. Probably left over from our college days, back when we were younger and well, much better able to survive on little sleep. Right now we're sleep-deprived mamas who find ourselves falling asleep sitting on the couch, mid-conversation. And Mary's pregnant too, so even more tired.

I climbed into bed at an actually halfway decent hour (well, kinda) and Becca almost immediately woke up. She was still coughing pretty badly so I just reached over and brought her onto the air mattress with me. Other than a few crying/coughing fits, she slept fine until morning.

Speaking of bedtime... I'll post more about the rest of the weekend tomorrow so stay tuned!

The first weekend in August

The first weekend in August is normally an important one for me. It’s the weekend that we drive over to Saugatuck and spend a day or two with my family. Kind of a mini, unofficial family reunion of sorts. I think we’ve done this for the past 5 years or so – always on the first weekend in August.

My mom has 2 older sisters, Barb and Pat. Aunt Pat lives near my mom, over by Detroit. Aunt Barb and Uncle Dick live outside of Chicago. They also own a house in Saugatuck – a 2-unit where they stay in the upper apartment and rent out the bottom one to tourists or family (we don’t pay though). We went a few times when I was younger but then hadn’t for many years while my mom and Aunt Barb were estranged. Aunt Pat goes for a week every summer and for the past several years my mom has gone with her now that she and Aunt Barb are ok again. Since I live within easy driving distance (Saugatuck is about 40 minutes away) I generally bring the girls over either one or two days of the 2nd weekend that they are there – the first weekend in August. Ron sometimes comes – by a weird fluke the first weekend of August is also his own family reunion so he’ll generally go to that instead if he doesn’t have to work. This is also always been one of the two times a year that we would generally see my brother when he lived in San Francisco – he always would visit over the first weekend in August and then again at Christmas. Sometimes various cousins come as well with their families too.

So it’s always been a pretty big deal and the only time that I usually ever see my Aunt Barb and Uncle Dick (barring any weddings or baby showers that might pop up during the year). Uncle Dick has been in poor health for years – the guy is in his 80’s and has pulled through several times when the doctors held out no hope (heart issues mostly). So every year we are aware that it could be the last since nobody knows what Aunt Barb will do with the Saugatuck house after Uncle Dick passes – she doesn’t drive long distances so wouldn’t be likely to come over here herself.

My mom called me last weekend to let me know that she and Aunt Pat wouldn’t be going to Saugatuck this year – Uncle Dick is in the hospital. Apparently his kidneys failed and he is now on dialysis. I’m praying that he pulls through yet again although when I talked to Mom last night, he was back in the hospital with fluid in his lungs and a low platelet count (although not Leukemia, thank goodness). I was looking forward to seeing Becca do ‘high fives’ with him – something he loves to do with the kids and it was so cute to watch him do them with Abby and Hannah when they were toddlers. We’ve been lucky in general as a family – we haven’t had a funeral since I was around Abby and Hannah’s ages. We all expect that Uncle Dick’s will probably be the first to come – we just don’t know when.

So this weekend will be bittersweet for me. My mom is coming up today to stay for the weekend (but my brother has to work). We’re all hoping that Uncle Dick gets better and that we can do the usual family visit later in the month. I don’t know if we’ll try to do many of our usual ‘Saugatuck’ activities while mom is here or wait and hope that later in the month works out. We usually spend Saturday visiting with my aunts and uncle, then Mom, Donnie the girls and I take the ferry across the river from the house to town and walk around downtown Saugatuck for a couple of hours - visiting the shops, playing in the park. Saugatuck is a wonderful place, full of art galleries, all kinds of shops and great eating. We usually get ice cream and walk along the riverfront looking at all of the big yachts and boats. Later on in the afternoon, we head to the beach and play in the sand and water until late. Then back to the house for a late dinner and (for me and the girls) home. If we come back on Sunday, we usually go blueberry picking.

We’ll definitely try to head over to Lake MI tomorrow and hit a beach – I’m just not sure which one. The girls always love to go to the ‘big beach’. Other than that… we’ll see, I guess.

Here are some photos of past Saugatuck visits…
